WASTE PROJECTION

A waste characterizationconducted by the City in May 2005 indicated that the per capita waste generation is around 0.40 kg/day. The following table shows the projected wastes generated by the total population of the 13 urbanizing barangays of Passi City. The projected waste volume generated is at 4,148 tons in 2006, 4,493 tons in 2010, 5,036 tons in 2015 and 5,794 tons in 2021.

The succeeding table shows the projections for the total wastes generated in the 13 barangays from the commercial sector, from institutions, industries, service centers, and the special wastes from the hospital and clinic.

The 2 tables presented above provide the basis for decision on required landfill size for the disposal of residual waste as well as on the volume of wastes that need to be diverted from the waste stream through composting and recycling.

WASTE DIVERSION

The projected waste diversion figures of the 13 urbanizing barangays of Passi City from 2007 to 2021 are based on two assumptions:

  • waste diversion of 5% to 10% in 3 years through recycling activities and
  • a higher rate of 10% to 20% in 5 years of waste diverted from the disposal site due to composting.

With these assumptions, the reduction on the total volume (weight) of residual waste in 2010, 2015 and 2020 is considerable. The waste diversion activities will also reduce the volume of waste to be disposed at a planned sanitary landfill.
