WASTE PROBLEMS IN PASSI CITY
During a series of key informants’ interviews conducted by the GTZ-AHT Solid Waste Management for Local Government Units, perceptions of the informants on waste problems in Passi City are revealed. The main issues and concerns involve the following:
- Waste segregation is not consistently being implemented in the City.
- The waste collection system is not efficient and waste collection equipment and facilities are inadequate to serve the needs of the households, commercial centers, and institutions in the city.
- The implementation of local ordinances and regulations on waste management is not pursued regularly.
- Wastes are disposed at an open dump site. However, the City government has initiated steps to construct a sanitary landfill at an identified site in barangay Aglalana.
- Littering in public places is prevalent.
- Majority of the residents of Passi City do not practice appropriate waste habits. There is a need to implement an environmental education and information component integrated with the solid waste management program of the city.
