Buenavista is a 4th class municipality in the island Province of Guimaras. The municipality has 36 barangays; 7 are urban and 29 are rural barangays. The 7 urban barangays are covered by the Local Government Unit’s waste collection system. With a population density in the urban areas of 618 persons per sq. km., settlements are clustered close to each other and waste becomes a community problem. In the rural barangays where farming is the principal occupation of the people, agriculture and yard waste are easily transformed into a resource: as compost for crops.

A waste characterization conducted in the municipality in June 2006 reveals that 72.24  percent constitutes bio-degradable wastes of market wastes  while  the figure stands at 71.98 percent of household wastes. Bio-degradable wastes including market left-over, yard trimmings, food scraps, and fruit and vegetable peelings and yard wastes. The enormous proportion of organic wastes points to a potential in waste management.

This website will highlight composting as the most important component of the implementation of the solid waste management program of Buenavista. It is as well the most viable and sustainable component as it is directly linked to the agricultural way of life of its people.

The focus on composting as a best practice will:
Present the efforts of the Local Government Unit in establishing a demo-center where knowledge on composting and its processes are being shared and disseminated;
Show how the LGU solid waste management office develop its technology and methods on composting; View Video
